“Teaching Is Not A Fallback”
A Tribute to the Teachers of the World

“Of all the professions in the world, the job of the teacher has opportunity to touch lives the most.” marikenya

In our guidance and counseling subject last night, Our professor Dr. Pasco made us choose between a lecture or watching a movie (with a reflection paper after of course). Of course, since we were all tired (coming in to classes from our day jobs), we were happy for a movie breather so we chose the latter.

We bought our chichirya (junk foods) and c2 (ice trea) and settled to watch the night’s premier —Mr. Holland’s Opus — a story of a musician turned teacher who greatly affected lives of his students and made a notable impact in his community.

Holland opus

Richard Dreyfuss plays the of role Glenn Holland, the musician whose goal is to create his own composition so he took the job of a teacher thinking it would give him more free time to focus on making his song.

At first, he was a stiff teacher and not caring about his students. The principal who was observing him since day one told him “I never saw a teacher sprinting to the parking lot after the bell as eager as his students.” As he went on teaching though, Holland became more and more involved with his students and learned to adjust to their needs like giving remedial classes to slow learners and letting rock ‘n’ roll be played in his music classes to entice the interest of the students. That was when he realized that teaching requires more time than he ever imagined and that he would not be able to finish his composition.

“Playing music is about fun. The music should come from the heart.” I may have rephrased Holland’s words a bit but that was the essence of his classes… Instead of forcing the kids to focus and play classical music that they can’t relate to, he made them play upbeat tunes and rock ‘n’ roll and they all enjoyed and excelled in it.

“I will use Beethoven or rock ‘n’ roll if that would keep me teach music to my students,” his words when criticized that he should only teach classical music to the kids.
