The 200 year-old residence of Don Laureano Guevara, better known as Kap. Moy and considered the founder of the country’s footwear industry, has been cited as a historical place by the National Historical Commission. Kap Moy’s house was the first to cater shoe manufacturing in town.

Don Laureano, the son of Jose Emiterio Guevara and Matea Mariquita, started the shoemaking business in 1887 with the help of Tiburcio Eustaquio, Ambrocio Sta. Ines and herbacio Carlos. The group discovered the proer method of making footwear and started the climb to history.

From a shoe house, it was converted to become the home of needy residents of Marikina. At this time, the legendary Doña Teresa dela Paz was actively engaged in her philanthropic services for the poor and underprivileged. She bought the house of Kap. Moy to serve the needs of the marginal sector of the community. The hacendera presented the dwelling of the Kapitan to his brother-in-law Don Jose Espiritu. Eventually, it was transformed into a primary school and many years later, the local government of Marikina developed it to be the city’s cultural center.
