Part II of the 3-part Series on “Teaching Is Not A Fallback.” A Tribute to the Teachers of the World.
Another unforgettable scene for me was the conversation between Holland and his co-teacher and friend who was a P.E. teacher and a football coach. He was asking Holland a favor — to teach playing an instrument and making a band member one of his quarterback players whose grades are miserable so the school would still let him play for the team. Apparently, the boy was hopeless when it comes to playing any instrument and Holland rejectedly told this to his friend who said to him:
“You’re a lousy teacher if you can’t teach a willing student.”
The hardest for Holland was when their only child, Cole, was diagnosed positive of 90% hear loss. Imagine someone who’s very passionate in music became a father of a deaf child. How ironic!
It was a struggling drama and I wouldn’t forget what the special teacher of Cole said to Holland: “The most important teacher your kid would ever have is his parent.” Isn’t it true? That teachers, like psychologists and those in other professions, may be good in their craft and in impacting people’s lives, but are a failure when it comes to handling their own family’s affairs.
“You are a good teacher but a lousy father,” his wife’s message to him which Holland replied “no matter how I try, I seem to be doing the wrong things.”
It’s also a problem to most of us right? We can’t seem to have the time for all the things that we need to do. Between teaching and composing and his family, Holland regarded the latter to be in the least of his priorities.
What I love about the movie and Holland’s life was when Rowena — a beautiful and musically-talented student — entered his life and became his greatest temptation, Holland walked through it and not fell for it because of his love for his wife. How I wish all men would be that faithful and would maintain their integrity as a husband and father to their children.
