Marikenya’s Journey Into the Blogging Haven

“Slowly finding my niche in the blogging world.”

I have long ago thought of having my own blog. In fact, before having my own domain Marikenya, I was already maintaining different blogs hosted by friendster, multiply, blogger and even piczo.

It was through Neil, a good friend I met in my CPE class, that I finally decided getting my own domain (Neil paid for my domain and hosting and I still owe him dollars for that). He was very convincing and very supportive and truly knowledgeable that I know, I’d be lost in my blogging venture if not for him.

So now, my Marikenya is already a couple of months up and is slowly finding its way in the online scene. As a newbie, let me offer you some tips on how I started in this addictive blogging habit. Who knows, it may be helpful to you too…

  • Know the right people with the right attitude. I was lucky I met Neil (right Jen?) who happened to be a web geek and a guy with his heart in the right place! I only met few selfless people in my lifetime and among those in my top list is Neil. He was patient enough to guide me and Jen in clicking the right buttons, installing the right softwares, registering with the right websites, meeting the right bloggers, and even writing the right posts!
  • Read and Try! Neil always scold me whenever I’m impatient. He would tell me “Nak ng tokwa, what I learned in months, you and Jen wanted to learn in a day!” When I started blogging, I did not even know the term CSS and although I’ve heard about HTML, I don’t have the faintest idea how to use it in creating my posts or designing my website. I would bombard Neil with a lot of questions and ask him to do a lot of things for me –Koya, please install me this software… Koya, please change my template… Koya, please make me this… (Please note that I only call him Koya to tease but I’m actually older than him :) ) A good blogger should learn by reading and trying what he read about. The internet is such a vast source of information and in a click, you’ll find everything you need to know but it would be terribly confusing to absorb and try to learn everything at once. Take your time and take it slow. It makes blogging enjoyable that way.
  • If you can, try to attend a seminar or a discussion on Blogging so you’ll get to understand the terms Adsense, Page Rank, SEO and many more! Of course you’ll find everything online but it’s always enjoyable and more interesting to learn when you can personally interact with each other and readily ask questions and even see demonstrations! See our “guru” and our discussion? It was really fun!

  • Join Forums like pinoy press and word-press pinoys and other communities where you’ll meet other bloggers like mybloglog and pinoyblogosphere. Make yourself known to the blogging community.
  • Exchange link with other sites. You can also try uploading your links to websites that sponsor free link exchange.
  • In monetizing, for starters, do the following: apply your site to Google AdSense; open an account with Paypal and apply to paid posts site like payperpost, smorty, blogsvertise, etc. where your articles will equivalent to cash.
