Tips and Tricks to Cure Shopping Addiction

Oly the Hubby: Why are you quiet? Are you Okay?
Mhel: Nope, I’m not Okay, I’m Stressed.
Oly the Hubby: I see. Go get some rest
Mhel: Nope, I’m going to the mall, I need to Shop!

Familiar scenario? If so, then you’re just addicted to shopping as I am! My problem is really my being a terribly compulsive buyer, a really shopping addict. I shop whenever I can, especially If I have more money than what I need in my wallet. I shop for things I don’t need, and at times, won’t ever need or use. I have a lot of stuff I bought which never even saw the light of day.

My husband would just roll his eyes whenever he would see the clutter lying in our room which mainly were my kikay stuff that wouldn’t fit the drawers or the closet anymore. It is a problem indeed and I know that (much as I hate to admit it…).

So, at the onset of 2008, among my resolutions is to cure my fascination for shopping and end my being a compulsive buyer. I’ve written my Personal Tips for Compulsive Buyers Like Me on how to Stop wasting money and Save for a change. Here goes —

  • MAKE SURE the CLOTHES FIT BEFORE BUYING for God’s Sake! My biggest sin in shopping is buying clothes without fitting it or at times, fitting it and seeing it was small for me but buying it anyway because I loved the design or color.

  • DON’T JUSTIFY your Purchases. I always tell myself I deserve to buy this and that because I worked so hard the last few days and It’s my reward for myself. I always end up spending all the money plus more I earned from my sidelines.
  • Do not WINDOW SHOP and Carry a Shopping List. Wandering around in a mall or in a supermarket without a shopping list is a sure fire way of spending all the money in your pocket.
  • DON’T SALIVATE whenever you hear there’s a SALE! I’m a sucker for Sales honestly. And whenever I shop for Sale items, I really feel good that I bought a lot of items in their marked down prices only to find out in the end that most things I bought, I don’t really need or not like much. I only bought them because they’re cheaply priced.
  • STOP USING your CREDIT CARDS. I really mean this. This habit of using my credit cards when shopping ruined my financial peace of mind. I agree with the second richest man in the world, Warren Buffet whose advice to young people is “do not get (or use) credit cards.”
  • OPEN a SAVINGS ACCOUNT. You know, with only Php2,000.00, you’ll be able to open a personal ATM savings account with Metrobank already. Today, I try to at least save a thousand or a few hundred in this account during payday (still small I know but a good way to start). If you open an ATM account, try not to bring the ATM with you when you go malling so you won’t be tempted to use it to shop.
  • I’m sure my husband would love this article. Let’s all have a more “prosperous” 2008. :D

Hi sis, sobrang nakakarelate ako dito. Nagagalit na nanay ko minsan kasi wala ng paglagyan ang mga damit ko, hehe. But i am slowly having a control of myself now… Sa ngayon, di ko masyadong alam ang mukha ng mall, hahaha!

Keep us posted sis on how you are faring ha. Slowly but surely. Sabi nga nila two steps forward, one step backward. Atleast lamang parin yung forward in the long run.. till you slowly embrace the whole idea. Di mo mamamalayan milyonarya ka na kasi you get to save moolah instead of spending it the way u were used to. Masaya yan! God bless sa iyo! :-)
