Mothers are indeed very special and it was just fitting that every year, Mother’s Day is celebrated as a tribute to their unconditional, unpretentious and unparalleled love. It is this day of the year that a mother should be given special treatment — breakfast in bed, day-off from chores, Mothers Day Baskets with lovely flowers, and more.
For more appreciation of this special occasion, let us visit briefly its history. The popular belief was Mother’s Day was envisaged in the boardroom of Hallmark but in truth, the earliest tributes to mothers began in Greece and Rome as offering to their gods. In United States, 150 years ago, Anna Jarvis organized an event called “Mother’s Day Work” and she also urged President Woodrow Wilson to declare the second Sunday of May as Mothers Day. Interestingly, the daughter of Anna Jarvis, also named Anna, started a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother. Young Anna said she would never forget when her mother said this in a Sunday school lesson: “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother’s day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers.”
Today, almost every Mother’s Day Gift ideas are conceived of. In the internet alone, you will find a lot of resources pointing you to websites selling Flowers for Mothers or services and products that would delight the most special woman in our life.
As a mother myself, I have come to realize that Mother’s Day is best celebrated not by having parties or receiving expensive gifts but by having your family with you in this special occasion. Efforts are more appreciated than, gifts need not cost a dime. Time and love spent in making or coming up with the gift is better and more special than anything in the world. Mothers are very sentimental and appreciative.
I would not forget what I have given my mother when I was in third grade: a poem I have written especially for her which made her cry, it was titled “para lamang sa ‘yo inay” (only for you my mother). Some years back, I have also given my loving mother-in-law a mother’s day gift: a lovely pair of shoes. What made her sentimental though was not the shoes, it was the words that I have written in the card thanking her for supporting and guiding our marriage.
For those with hefty budget, here are wonderful gift ideas that would make your mother smile on her day:
- A really nice bouquet of her favorite flowers or if she doesn’t have a particular kind, buy flowers of her favorite color. I have a lady professor in college who gives good grades to students who wear her favorite color and uses violet in their folders, papers, etc. ![]()
- Buy her a tool or machine for her hobby or relaxation. A washing machine or an oven is not a good gift, these equipment means household chores. Give her an electronic gadget or a an appliance that would compensate her for her hard work like a new cellular phone, a new tv set, etc.
- Is she in-love with gardening? Beautiful and colorful orchids are the nicest choice. Make the orchids more memorable by attaching name tags into it, name the orchids by her name, nick, and favorite people.
- Bring her to a parlor, then to the spa, and end the end the day with a nice dinner in a cozy restaurant. She would feel very beautiful, relaxed and thoroughly happy.
Whatever gift you give her, the most important thing is to attach your love with it by writing a personal card with your personalized message. Mothers love being told how much she is loved. Arent’ we all?
