Moms, Be Careful When Shopping for School Supplies. Read My National Book Store Experience.

June 11, 2008 · Filed Under general, self-help, shopping

The school season just started this week and until last week and even up to this day, mothers are very busy preparing the things their kids need for school. This includes trips to the book and department stores to buy school supplies, bags, shoes, etc. I was one of these moms and I headed to the National Bookstore (NBS) in Robinson’s Metro East last weekend to scout for a trolley bag for my little Marikenyo.

When we came to NBS, it was not surprising that it was totally crowded with parents and even children making last-minute shopping for school supplies. I was lax with my bag since I was thinking, I’m in the mall, not in Divisoria or a market. After some time, I heard the guy beside me saying a little louder “mag-ingat sa mandurukot” (be careful with snatchers). I immediately looked for my MP4 which I placed in the pocket of my bag and learned that the zipper was opened and the only thing left is the earphones. My MP4 was stolen while I was browsing for school supplies right inside the National Bookstore!

When I reported the incident to the security guard, I learned that I was the third victim of snatchers at the NBS just for that day. Imagine that! It was fortunate that my money and my cellphones are buried deep in my bag and I was not wearing that gold anklet to the mall. The security even told me to look at their CCTV camera recording to see if it would give us a clue about the snatcher but I stared at their recording for quite some time and not even once I saw myself in it so I left.

The lesson: always be careful with your things. Malls are not safe anymore. It’s sad really. I hope that National Book Store would tighten their security especially before school opening when people flock their stores. Not even once I heard reminders in their PA system for customers to be wary of snatchers when there were already incidents of such in their store. How irresponsible.

Reminders will only serve a little. They need to work on having tighter security measures =(

I remember a few years ago, my wallet containing 3,000 pesos was stolen in NBS Galleria. Mall security gave me money for parking. I soon found out the strategy of these people. They bump you to distract your attention while someone picks on your bag. When someone bumps you, just watch out next time.

I am sorry to hear that Mhel. Kakainis no? Pinaghirapan mo bilhin o di naman kaya ay nabigay sayo tapos kukunin nila.

But you know what, times like this kung ako nasa place mo, sasabihin ko, buti na yun hindi ikaw nasa lugar nya. Kailangan pa mangupit para makabili ng kailangan.

Babalik din yun Mhel, one way or the other.

    Cheers!

my wallet was also stolen yesterday in NBS SM Southmall.

I was looking at educational posters at the far end of the store where the photo albums, magazines and gift items are and very few customers, im quite sure there are no cameras.

Their strategy: one lady dressed in party clothes (im pretty sure not a mom)was distracting me by looking and getting the posters im looking at too. Then 3 more ladies (looking more like moms) were starting to crowd the poster section, my thought bubble:(marami ba talagang may kailangan ng poster at lahat kami ay nag aagawan ng mga poster) if i was alone maybe i would have walked away but i was with my 7 year old kid who was also busy looking at posters, i actually pulled back but the 4 ladies started crowding my kid. As i tried to get in to pull back my kid, the ladies started to squeeze me then me and my kid tried to step out of them, i was really forcing myself out. They try to cover up the situation by literally covering themselves with posters!!! Then when I was about to pay at the cashier my wallet w/ 3k+ cash was not there.

I reported it to security but they look so dumb and i just felt that no chance to get back my wallet.

Fortunately, my wallet with all my important cards was recovered at the comfort room that night, SM security was very helpful.

I think the same with others who commented that “reminders will only serve a little” because when you’re there at the store, you are so pre occupied with so many things already, the things you need to buy, check quality and damages, comparing prices and if you have kids along with you!

Having cameras around and putting more security will threaten them somehow.

I got quite confident as well… it was a sunday, which means worry free, relaxing family day for us and no time to worry for snatchers.

I still have a clear picture of their faces in my mind… actually if i see them again i can definitely recognize them again. Aside from their faces they have different behavior…

    1. they try to distract you by either looking at the things you are looking at to the point you will get irritated
    2. not focused on what they are going to buy, gonna look at the posters then other stuff parang di mapakali
    3. follow you around
    4. they try to crowd and squeeze you

I hope this will help other moms like me…

fyi: my other officemate also lost her wallet in National Bookstore in southmall in the same area

im hoping one of these days ill see them again in NBS…

    twinkido…

    those are good tips.

looks like NBS is becoming a favorite spot for snatchers. pity, NBS is not doing anything to tighten their security. as for me, na-trauma nko sa NBS.
