Happiest Moments of a Temporary Stay-at-Home Mom

It’s terrible getting sick. I caught the bug and I had to take a leave of absence for almost a week. Unintentionally, I became a stay-at-home mom.

I have experienced becoming totally domesticated and I kinda enjoyed it. I can sleep a little later because luckily, my son’s school time begins in the afternoon. I can cook our breakfast and play with my son up until he needs to get ready for school. I haven’t done this in a long while since a working mom is always press for time. I can tell my bonding moments with my only child makes him real happy because he smiles in the morning whenever I say Mommy’s not going to office today.

For two days, I have decided to fetch him from school. I was surprised how happy my son made me during our long walks back to our house where he joyfully related to me his school activities for the day. His eyes dance while he animates his stories and I know right there and then, my being absent from work is all worthwhile.

“Dark Knight” Fever

Batman’s “Dark Knight” fever is here this week and you can see my beloved hubby and son dressing up for the movie. We definitely wouldn’t miss this classic black superhero’s adventure with his most popular villain, the Joker.

dark knight

My husband and I grew up with CD comics superheroes. In my memory, Batman along with Superman, Superwoman, and all others will never cease to save the day. During my growing years, their characters made me believe that good men always win. Although in reality, it is not always like that, I always wanted to believe that. I wanted to pass on that values of believing in good men to our son and so we are exposing him to Batman and all other selfless heroes. We need more a lot of these kinds these days right?

    The Pills Craze

Life is indeed hard these days that if you want to live comfortably, you can’t thrive doing just one job. In my circle of friends, I have somehow earned the nick the source.” This is because I sell a lot of stuff as a sideline. The good thing about me being a freelance salesperson is that I don’t sell products I don’t believe in or I don’t trust. I am not good at lying and I’m proud of this.

The other week, I was asked to sell diet pills and glutathiones. I was so tempted to do this because a lot of women, or even men, are into these pills lately. The Philippine marketplace was suddenly flooded with these products that promises the user the shortest route to beauty and glamor. I am so tempted. In fact, last year, I have taken those supposedly “harmless chinese herbal diet pills.” Those drugs helped me lose 10 pounds in a week by making my appetite go away but it also made me very nervous, my heart palpitated three times faster than what it used to be so I stopped.

If We’re Safer, I’d Have My Player Back

Last month, I have narrated how my MP4 player got snatched while I was shopping at National Book Store. It was a dreadful experience simply because I love my MP4 player. It was what helped me get through traffic jams, waiting in lines, and survive boring moments.

I was not an extremely musically inclined individual but when we went to Baguio some weeks ago and I was the only one without a headset on even from cheap MP3 players, I felt too bored looking at the scenery before my eyes. In my sadness, I thought: “I’d buy an iPod next payday.”

    A Marikenya Reader’s Dilemma

To Ann, please forgive me for posting your letter just now. I appreciate your sharing with us your challenges as a mother and as a home manager. I am a mother myself but the problems I faced are too modest compared to what you are experiencing.

Sincerely, I’m very happy to know that this site has helped you in some way in coping with your dilemmas. I hope that by posting your letter, our readers may be able to provide some sort of assistance also to you and your problems.

    Marikenya,

Hi again! I love reading your blogs. It takes away 800 kilograms of (emotional) load off my shoulders. You see, I am a parent of two, my eldest is now an 8 year old schoolboy, and my baby is now 9 months. Recently, we have been liberated from our predicament of paying for special milk (more expensive than gold!) because we were able to shift to a much much cheaper milk without my baby having any dreadful reactions. That is a burden evaporated! My son, actually my stepson who I’ve had since he was just 2, is in Grade 2 now. He has been “diagnosed” with Mild ADHD. After the early years of complicated arrangements and emotional chaos in relation with his biological mother, I have been faced with yet another turmoil. With all the physical strain from taking care of a baby, and all the stress from daily life, everyday is a struggle. I feel like I am at the brink of breaking down everyday. Are there therapy centers which offer affordable Occupational Therapy sessions? As much as we would like to help him with therapy (which will ease the way for overcoming the ADHD), we simply cannot afford it! Are there also any support groups for parents who may be going through the same ordeal? Hope you could help. Thanks in advance!

    Ann

Book and Movie Love Story Quest

This morning, my good friend Bechay came to the office excitedly narrating about Oprah’s show last night where the infamous host talked about great love stories of all times. We all became excited about the featured love stories of the guests couples and we listened intently with ‘ooohhhsss and ‘aaaaahhhs on the side. I am such a sucker for happy-endings and mushy romantic stories.

Oprah recommended a book entitled ‘Pillars of the Earth,’ it’s a love story which dated back during the middle-ages. She said the book was so good she had a hard time putting it down to do some ‘important’ things. I’d check out this book later because I just finished ‘Digital Fortress’ by Dan Brown which I also recommend as a must-read.

    A Marikenya Reader’s Notes

It feels good when readers of Marikenya take time to write and give their feedback about the site. Let me share with you this mail I have received from a reader, Prof. Gayondato.

    Hello Mhel,

I chance upon your website while doing my research on Social Sustainability – Case Study on Metro Manila in general and Marikina in particular – and of course, the common denominator – Hon. Bayani Fernando.

The site is great. I commend your creative genius and sincere tribute to the land which you cherish and the man who made Marikina’s vision a reality.

I am a great fan as well of your development icon. First, because I was once involved in the development programs of Metro Manila (as MMC staff and land use zoning coordinator for Makirika-Pasig-QC circa late 1970s) and secondly because I have witnessed the passionate transformation of Marikina city as an urban sustainable development model.

I have chosen to write you in your yahoo address to send you as well some photographs taken by my son, Raymond Joseph T. Gayondato (you can catch his photos at rawrage.multiply.com). I’m mighty proud that he was able to capture these beautiful sights of Marikina bridge which I also have also used in my various powerpoint presentations.

I am presently connected as Faculty Member of Colombo Plan Staff College, an inter-governmental organization of 20 member countries, based at the DepEd (former University of Life) complex in Pasig City.

    Thanks and more power!

    Sincerely,

    Prof. TJ Tesoro Gayondato

I remember Prof. TJ from the international forum on Poverty Alleviation I attended at DepEd Compound last year, she was one of the moderators of the forum. I’m really flattered to hear from her. My next Marikina Peek edition would contain his son’s photos of the Marikina bridge so watch out for it.

(You may send your messages, feedback, or suggestions to Marikenya via the contact form or by sending me an email at marikenya@yahoo.com)

    What’s Worth It?

I’ve learned another valuable lesson today on motherhood: “my son’s smile and words of gratitude is more than the sum of everything I wanted to have in this world.”

Being somewhat a “kikay” type, I have always been fond of bags, shoes, and accessories and blings. Last month, I saw a really pretty pair of fashion jewelry in my favorite store but since it’s not in my budget, I have decided to wait ’till payday to buy it. Instead of buying the earrings though, I ended up buying my son a really cute small school bag for his P.E. every Friday. Looking at his beaming face tonight saying “thank you mama,” I felt I already died and went to heaven. Oh yes, he’s all worth it. Motherhood always does that to you.
