SONA Tirade: Is Texting Really Down to Fifty (50) Cents?

The State of the Nation’s Address (SONA) of the president yesterday was again successful in creating hubbub among the Filipino people. Top issues includes, would you believe, the cost of text messages which the president said would be lowered by 50 (fifty) cents. Oh yes, this “national program” is definitely worth praising mentioning in a SONA. The texting capital of the world is indeed in high spirits by now.

After the announcement though, mobile users began to wait when this spectacular event would happen but hours later, it is still not effective. At least not in the way consumers thought it would be. Why not, the telecommunication companies (telcos) are against it. Why lower the price when they are making such good profit, many Filipino mobile users are so addicted to texting that even even bad jokes and chain messages were popularized.

The question is up again. Is the announcement effective already? No. Only Smart Communications expressed recognition of the request of the president but even Smart played this price-cut by introducing a promo to subscribers. A promo okay, not a permanent or regular rate.

The promo is just like any other promo by Smart, Globe, and other networks where you get to text more if you’re texting someone within the same network as yours. Registration is needed of course to avail of this promo. Briefly, this is how it goes:

(from migsmobile.net)
For Smart subscribers, Type TO20 then send to 2827. For Globe or Touch Mobile subscribers, type TO_20 and send to 2868. For both networks, you have to maintain 21.00 balance before you register. After registering, P20.00 will be slashed from your load. You then have to maintain P1.00 for you to still be able to avail of the promo. Once you are registered, you will now have 40 sms credits for you to be able to use to send text messages to other networks. And it will be valid for 1 day only (24 hours). After you consume all the 40 sms credits, any message sent to other networks after that will be charged with the regular rate of P1.00 per sms.

So you see, it’s simply like registering for an Unlimited promo, or probably, this Unli thing that is very popular to young people is even better because you get to text as much as you want in a day unlike this “price slash” scheme that only gives you 40 text messages for P20.00.

Thank God I’m not a text addict or I will get more frustrated by an outstanding SONA revelation for us hopefuls.
