On River and Groundwater Care and Septic Tank Management

Early this year, I have involved in a project concerning river and groundwater rehabilitation. One of the main objectives of the group is to create awareness on proper use and management of septic tanks since its wastewater eventually leads to the drainage system down to the river. Untreated wastewater pollutes our river and groundwater.

During the study, I have learned very important things which makes me worry about our own septic tank at home which is not even made of Precast Concrete which is quite expensive. One is that you should know where the septic tank opening is to easily locate it for desludging purposes. My father constructed our house and at that time, I wasn’t concerned about the specifics. No one in the family knows but him where the septic tank opening is, the problem is he passed away three years ago.

Here are some important information you should know on septic tank construction and management so you wouldn’t encounter problems like mine:

- As much as possible, place the septic tank outside of the perimeter of the house. Ours is constructed below our kitchen which is already tiled. Now, we need to remove the tiles so we would be able to find the opening of the tank.

- If no one in the household knows about construction, better research on septic tank construction first from websites like www.jensenprecast.com. This company employs modern technology on septic tank construction and sells quality Precast Concrete Septic Tanks.

- Desludging should be made once every three years especially so if there are more than four people in a household using the same septic tank. Desludging is very helpful so as not to experience clogged toilets and also environmental friendly.

- As much as possible, use natural or organic materials when cleaning your toilet. Soap and other cleaning products contains chemicals that kills the helpful bacteria that thrives in your septic tank and helps dissolve wastes.

- Do not throw tissue, paper, used oil, cigarette butts, hair, and all other solid waste inside the toilet bowl. If ever you accidentally slipped your soap or coins or other stuff in the bowl, get it out of there to prevent clogging.
