A Letter on Ka-Angkan Festival

A reader named Nimfa written quite a long letter about her being a Nepomuceno’s wife and about the Ka-Angkan Festival:

Hi my name is nimfa, it is my husband whose a nepomuceno, he’s from marikina, my father in-law is enteng nepomuceno. My husband told me before that they have a “pagawaan ng shoes” but it get burned. I don’t know the whole story. Somebody has told me before that you guys there have this parade I think every year by angkan is that true?

Year ago when we were in a mall, in sta lucia mall, a family is wearing a green t-shirt with printing “angkan ng mga nepomuceno” it really caught my attention because they are so proud of who they are. I ask my husband to go over them and ask if they really are nepomucenos but my husband is so ashamed so Im the one who ask they if they really nepomucenos, they said that they are and they’re from marikina. They smile at me and I told them that my husband is a nepomuceno also and he’s from marikina. I called my husband and they exchange pleasantries because I cannot carry the conversation due to unlimited information for the nepomucenos.
May I know who you are? Is it true that willie nep is a relative of the nepomucenos of the marikina. When other learned of my last name they ask me if I am related to paeng nepomuceno, I said I am not according to my husband because paeng is from pampanga is not from marikina, is that true?

Well Im so sorry for the long letter. Good day. Nimfa

First, thank you Nimfa for your story. It is true that there is a festival in Marikina called Ka-Angkan Festival (others call it Angkan-Angkan Festival). Here is a description of the festival from my previous article on the topic:

The Ka-Angkan Festival or Festival of Clans started in 1999, it has always been celebrated in April during the Founding Anniversary Week of the city. The theme of the feast: Ka-Angkan Ko Mabubuting Tao [my clan members are good people]. The festival is a tribute to natives or locals of Marikina whose oldest member of the clan lived in Marikina for more than 100 years.

About your cute story about the family of Nepos (Nepomuceno’s are also called Nepos in Marikina), you would find a lot of them in the city — Clan members who are proud of their Angkans. You would be prouder to know that Nepos are considered the largest clan in the city and each year, during the Ka-Angkan Festival, they always have the most contingent joining the parade and festival’s activities.

Is Willie Nepomuceno a tru-blue Nepo from Marikina? Oh yes he is! He is a regular guest on the festival and Nepos take pride that they have a lot of popular clan member like Willie Nep and Sen. Gordon.

Who am I? I’m not a Nepo nor a taal na taga-Marikina which means my family has not joined the festival as a recognized clan but I have always joined the festival and have prided myself as a tunay na taga-Marikina who was born and raised in the city. Marikina’s festival Rehiyon-Rehiyon was conceptualized for our likes who were not taal na taga-Marikina but chose this city as our second home.

I have a lot of friends from this clan and I am happy to meet another Nepo. :)

Hello Nimfa, I’m a Nepo and i am glad that you are interested to join in the festival, you will be amazed to discover many things about the clan, ask your husband to trace who is their assigned coordinator ( we have different coordinator for each group, which sometimes we call a Lipi, just to make it more manageable, there’s the Hapak, where i belong, the Gohet, the Batok, kulag pang lipi, kulubot, katwiran, etc.
