Increased Hacking Incidents Poses Need for Information Security Courses

Anywhere around the world, there are security bridges in technology — hacking incidents on servers, online banking accounts, websites, and blogsites. There are also a lot of online criminals (termed as scammers) lurking around the net waiting for the millions of internet users to trust them and soon as they do, they would rob them off their money and online investments. Surely, technology opened an opportunity for online crimes to be committed. Unfortunately too, policing and security is lacking in this area.

I can speak clearly of this as I have been recently victimized by a scammer which ran away scott-free with my money and my blog’s database. I tried investigating this bogus geek and found out a lot of information about him but after learning so much, the next question is — where can I go to ask help? Clearly, there are no cyber crimes law yet that would protect “small mediapreneurs” like me from scammers.

WW: The Biggest Daing (Dried Fish) Ever

Iloilo, Philippines is known for its dried fishes and octopus — daing and danggits! Here’s what my friend, Nhet, found at their central market, the biggest daing we’ve ever seen:

A Stress-Free Weekend in Iloilo, Philippines

Two weeks ago, I received an invite from the Foundation for the Fullness and Integrity of Creation, Inc. (FFICI) to attend a trainors’ training in Iloilo City, Philippines. The foundation is advocating the following values to parents and youth in the community level: responsible parenting, natural family planning, fertility awareness, and chastity.

Needless to say, I was immediately excited because of three things. Frst, I have recently decided that my personal advocacy would be promoting responsible citizenship and my being invited to be one of the trainors for the foundation would provide me a good opportunity to promote this cause to many people even outside of Marikina. Second, I haven’t been to Iloilo and I would love to see the place plus the trip would allow me (to finally!) get on a plane. Oh yes, I’m a first timer. :D Lastly, my responsibilities and multiple careers finally took a toll on me and before the trip, I felt I was close to burning out. I agreed to the trip also to spend some time for relaxation and unwinding.

God’s good. No, he’s perfect! He allowed me to realize all these objectives of mine for the trip. I’ve learned so much from the training and I was convinced by the foundation’s mission. I felt this is one foundation and one advocacy I can wholeheartedy participate in. The plane trips too were incredible. The first one though was not too enjoyable for me as I felt nauseatic and I wasn’t seated near the window so I wasn’t able to enjoy the view from above. Going back to Manila though, we charmed the ticketing officer of PAL to place us on window seats and she did! I felt how it was to be in “heaven,” literally and figuratively.

Government Promotes Barangay Drugstores (Botika ng Barangay)

Do you regularly buy medicines? Do you prefer generics or branded?

I raised this question as I am a regular buyer of maintenance drugs for my mother. It’s almost a year now that I’ve been consistently supplying her need for medication, specifically for her hypertension problems. Every month, we spend around 3 to 4,000 pesos for her medicines. Her being a senior citizen card holder helped us a lot in her medicinal purchases as she’s entitled to 20% discount.

Her doctor, a heart expert, advised her not to take generic drugs as the formulation or dosage may not be the same with the branded ones and may risk her condition. This fact we actually experienced true when one time, we bought her a generic drug because of the unavailability of the prescribed ones and she experienced health problems afterwards. It took us days before her condition normalized again.

Recuperating from Hosting Scam

Since I came back from Iloilo last weekend, I already avoided the feeling of needing time for resting and sleeping. Relaxing, even for some time, is not allowable at this point.

After Marikenya.com rested for days because of being victimized by a fraud hosting service, it was reverted to a sorry state last Sunday which ruined my stress-free weekend at Iloilo. I attended a seminar in the said province but the whole trip was so relaxing and fun. Once back, I needed to complete the prelim exam questionnaires for my two college classes, design and facilitate various trainings, and design different promotional materials. In short, this week is one the hardest week for me in terms of work load.

Challenges and Sorry State for www.Marikenya.com

This site has experienced a lot of downtime these days. My depression regarding the site’s sorry state was totally down. It was difficult for me to address easily the site’s problem for two reasons: first, I don’t have a back-up of my site; and second, it happened during the time I was extremely loaded with work.

The first downtime happened because I was tricked, scammed, and desolated by a fake web hosting service named eznet-hosting.com (you may check the site’s former content by google and yahoo cache page for this site). I would be divulging more information about this scammer in my next posts. Although I was too shocked about the catastrophe that befell my blog, I was able to act after a day of wishful thinking (it was just a nightmare). My friend hosted the site, put on the backup he kept before I transferred (almost four months outdated), and I put on the finishing touches (redesigning it and putting everything back) plus writing new posts. Before I left Manila, I was happier and forward looking that I have done much for the site.

That’s what I thought. When I checked the site after coming back Sunday evening, I immediately panicked when the site won’t show up and would return errors. The worpdress prompted me to upgrade or update the wp version. I asked my host to do this for me and when he signaled me it’s done, I excitedly went to my site and was more shocked that it reverted to its old state (March, 2009) – my plugins are gone, my widgets, my articles, and everything else — except the header design, were all gone. This second event was too much for me so I ended up crying hard.

Effects of The Hosting Scam

It’s been almost a week now after I was scammed by a pretentious hosting company but I can’t still move forward easily. There’s so much to be done (because I almost lost everything), but I’m confused and too depressed to start somewhere.

I still can’t believe this all happened. I’ve worked so hard to establish marikenya.com and in a matter of seconds, my site’s gone from the blogosphere along with my money (the advance payment for a year-worth of hosting). It was all too… surreal.

I wanted to cry but even my tears won’t go down. I was too stunned to think and decide what to do next. It was only after a day I made my first move by seeking the help of a good friend Neil who helped me establish marikenya.com and who hosted my site for years. Thank God for his immediate action, I was able to put marikenya.com online again but my articles from later part of March to July are all gone and not retrievable anymore. The reality is way too depressing for me.

Marikenya.com is Back!

After almost tree (3) difficult days of downtime, www.MARIKENYA.com is up and running! The story about this downtime is a long one and once I’m done with the important things I need to put back to this site, I would give you a complete rundown of what transpired why this blog site was down for days and what miseries I experienced because of what happened.

In the meantime, I would like to give my sincerest gratitude to the following:

  • God, for making me think clearly despite the panic attacks and sudden emotional bursts due to depression;
  • Neil, for saving me once again and helping me get through the mess. He’s the one responsible for bringing back Marikenya.com to life;
  • Avid blogger friends and readers, for notifying me and expressing concern about the site’s downtime. Thanks people!

    The cause for all this site’s miseries is our hosting service provided Eznet-hosting of www.eznet-hosting.com, which simply ran away with my sites’ databases and one-year advance hosting payment for my two blogs. This site just decided to abandon its subscribers just like that. I don’t know how we’ll ever get back to this hosting company but we will definitely not take this sitting down.

    To all of this site’s subscribers, thank you for patiently waiting for the site to go up and please bear with me while I am trying to put back in order. I’ve lost four-month-long articles as a setback of this event but I wanted to always look at the bright side of things. So again, thank you for remaining an avid reader and subscriber of this blog.
