A Birthday Collage of Happy Memories
Allow me to briefly narrate how a simple but beautiful birthday celebration went for a Marikenya…

In my last article, A Girl’s Simple Birthday Wish, I admitted what I wanted for my birthday is a house and lot, a really big dream. To humor myself though and to make the first step towards achieving this goal of a lifetime, I started my d-day by attending a morning seminar on housing loan at PagIbig in Atrium, Makati. With my luck, I met a very nasty and rude guy who was determined to ruin my day! But I was more determined to save my happiness for my birthday so I just gave him some calm words and walked away. The seminar was a success, I learned what I needed to learn, if and ever, I would decide to get a housing loan from PagIbig.
Next in the agenda was eating lunch. Our group consisting of my good friends Ninang Baybee, Ate Andrea and Ate Lisa and my hubby decided to hit it big for lunch by going to a buffet restaurant, the Kamayan Dads Saisaki! The last time I was in this place was four years ago and I really enjoyed their meal. The restaurant will provide you options, you can go Filipino or Japanese for more than three hundred (300) pesos or try everything on the house for more than five hundred (500) pesos which they call crossover. We decided to go Filipino and ravished the local dishes with gusto. We were even serenaded by the in-house musicians with a birthday song for me! Perfect!

A Girl’s Simple Birthday Wish
Who’s going to celebrate her birthday??? Don’t look any further, she’s it… better yet, am it!

The nice thing about birthdays is that you get to feel special on that special day of yours. The bad thing about is being a year old again. Not that I hate growing old because I can proudly say I mature each year, what I hate is the fact that I have lost another year to stay alive, be happy and make people I love happy with my presence.
Please try not to ask my age anymore, I won’t say it anyway. The photo above is my husband’s favorite picture of me which he took with his phone cam and is now his cell’s wallpaper. Another reason for me to feel good about my upcoming birthday right?
Let’s now get down to birthday wishes…

This year, I’d like to dream big and aim a little higher in terms of my birthday wish. If I am already a friend of yours in Facebook, you may find my status surreal and hilarious (my friends did…), read for yourself:
please don’t ask me what I want for my birthday. you may not like it if I say a brand new house and lot.

Need Help on Child Sleeping Problem
Posted by mhel in general, health and fitness on January 25th, 2010
May I solicit suggestions/recommendations on how to remedy our child’s poor sleeping habits?
My 7-year-old boy has been having problems sleeping early. Not that he actually treat this as a problem because he obviously enjoys sleeping very late. Just like any child, my son likes staying up late and we allow him this sleeping preference on weekends when he doesn’t need to wake up early for school.
However, he became fond of the late sleeping habits and he even applies it on weekdays now. What troubles us is that his eyes already show the strain from sleeping late and the dermatologist said sleeping late is among the factors for skin asthma which attacked him lately.

Desperate Living Room Makeover Wish
Just like any other housewife, I am in love with beautiful houses and fancy interior designs. My dream is to fully renovate our home to make it cozy and a place where we always wanted to go home to and relax. After all, a tired soul after a long day of work wanted her resting place to look like an inviting abode right?
Since our family acquired our house way back in 2002, I’ve always wished I can make it look like a cheap or inexpensive version of themed and designed homes. I am a fan of home-styling magazines and TV shows, particularly Real Living and House Life by Tessa Prieto. I marvel at how simple and sometimes, messy places, can be turned into real beauty through the creative genius of interior designers.

Breathtaking view of Bumod-ok Falls in Sagada taken by Engr. Ebet Malonzo. I hope I’ll be able to see this place one day.
Combatting Sleeping Disorder
Posted by mhel in general, health and fitness on January 20th, 2010
Do you sleep well at night? If not, do you have sleeping disorder or simply need to stay awake even during wee hours? If indeed you are lacking sleep, what are the visible effects of such in you physically, behaviorally, or health-wise?
In the last weeks, I myself have been experiencing sleep disorders. There was even a time this week where I fell asleep only after four (4) in the morning but the bad thing was I needed to get up at six (6) for a prior engagement. I felt very tired and the lack of sleep gave me a headache and terrible eyebags. Look at this photo –
A Journey of Experiences and Learning Towards the New Me

“The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions, and not on our circumstances.” Martha Washington
When you were born from a poor family, physically unattractive with a fat body, will you grow up with a positive outlook in life? I am Marikenya and —

While there are many who see beyond physical beauty, I still maintain my belief that our society can be judgmental to people who are not graced with such. What are my reasons for saying so? I grew up being mocked and humiliated for my imperfect physique which made my otherwise happy childhood a story with bitter parts.
I was born fat, grew up fat, and until now, as fat as I was once, or even fatter. I always say jokingly that the only time I ever experienced having a size 23 waistline was when I was in grade 2 (in elementary). In short, I never experienced having a thin or sexy waist and body in my entire life. While some say that “size does not matter,” in many occasions, I realized it does.

Philippine Holidays for 2010 and Summer Destinations
The Department of Tourism (DOT) issued early the calendar of Philippine Holidays this 2010 to guide tourists, local and foreign, to plan their vacations.
DOT encourages Pinoys to spend their vacation here in our local destinations other than going abroad to help the local economy. “Spend money here for the long holidays,” says DOT. Aside from the country’s eight (8) anchor sites which are Boracay, Palawan, Davao, Cebu, Bohol, Vigan, Baguio, and Manila, it encourages local tourists to visit what they dubb as “unexplored sites” which will help the communities in said areas. Some of these unexplored sites in terms of beaches are Camiguin, Leyte, Mindoro, Occidental and Oriental Negros, Siquijor, and Quezon while nature-lovers may consider going to Bataan, Batanes, Benguet, Bulacan, Cavite, Marinduque, and Romblon and heritage hunters may seek the old historical charm of Bacolod and Iloilo.
Here is the calendar of long weekends according to RA 9492 and Proclamation 1841, Malacanang’s declaration of regular and special non-working holidays for 2010:
