Safety Tips for Motorbiking in the Philippines
Motorbiking is very popular in the Philippines, even for tourists who wanted to roam around the cities and islands. Unfortunately, there are motorbike rental companies that are not keen on requirements where they allow tourists without drivers’ licenses to rent a moped or even a hardcore motorbike.
Unfortunately, this is also how many tourists end up in accidents. To prevent this from happening, here are few safety tips.
First of all, never, ever get on a bike or moped while you’re drunk. Don’t get on a bike even if you think you’re not drunk. All it takes is a small lapse in concentration for a serious accident to happen.
Second, only drive with experienced, sober people. Don’t get on the back of a bike if the driver is a tourist who’s never driven a bike in his/her life. Also, don’t drive with more than two people on a bike. It might be tempting to save the extra pesos on renting an extra bike and just stick with 3 people on a bike (you see it all the time in Asia,) but it’s simply not safe.
Consider investing in a set of train horns for yourself. Just a small set will do. Many of the old bikes in the Philippines have parts that don’t work very well. Often times the horns, the brake lights or the turn signals simply won’t work on a rented bike.
The most important of all of them is of course the horn, which is your #1 tool for preventing accidents. Having your own train horn on you makes it easy to avoid accidents in case you rent a bike that doesn’t have a proper horn installed.
Most importantly, pay attention and drive defensively. Be careful when the road is wet and take your bike learning slowly if you’re new.
