Thanks to God, typhoon Gener has subsided in Metro Manila and we are now enjoying a better weather in Marikina. I have been constantly monitoring the water level of the river for a few days now and is worried when it rose to 16.4 meters early morning yesterday.

The experience with Ondoy, the typhoon which made a deep mark in the heart and minds of Marikeños, will never be forgotten. In fact, that flooding in 2009 has forever changed our family’s lives. One manifestation of this is obvious in the way we plan/replan the design and space of our small home.

For instance, we have changed most wood cabinets and furniture  with either plastic or steel which may look drab or unglamorous but at least, they won’t wane when plunge under floodwater. In our kitchen area, I have decided to go with steel shelves, like the ones being sold at gondola shelving at Mfried.com for supermarket or department stores, for the storage of kitchen condiments, supplies and equipment. Our wood kitchen cabinet went awry because of the floodwater and since we needed instant kitchen shelves, I resorted to steel gondola shelving which was very easy to install.

We also decided not to put a lot of furniture on the ground floor of our house so we can easily put away on the second floor what need to be saved in case of flooding. Although if we would have the funding, we have plans of remodeling the house to make it flood-resilient — as in putting our living room on the second floor and making the ground floor a bare area meant only as a parking space and cooking station.Hopefully, we can do this in a few years.

How to keep your household fixtures unaltered and free from getting dingier brought by perennial inundation? Turn aside passionate preference for wood… and go metallic, or plastic is a brilliant Idea. Nonetheless, residents in flood prone area needs more advanced proficiency and skills of an inventor in a silly design planning to convert each family car into an amphibious vehicle drivable both on land and in water in time of extreme distress. Why not?

silly ideas proved very useful in the end. this is what i teach also in my class in entrepreneurship; innovation begins with silly ideas.
