In my travel agenda is a long list of places in the Philippines I wanted to see in the near future. On top of this list is a destination in the North (Luzon), about eight to ten hour travel by land from Metro Manila and just an hour ride if by plane. I have been meaning to go to this place because of its popular rich cultural heritage  and its beautiful beach.

Instead of getting there by plane, I wanted to travel by land. Since there’s an option for land travel and it’s just some hours away from Metro Manila, I like my little boy to experience such long travel with us taking in all the rural sights we would pass by along the way. Traveling by land has some advantages too such as having your own vehicle which in exploring the places in the target destination. When you travel by plane, you can’t bring along your auto and therefore, you will have to travel by cab or by jeepney or whatever mode of transit available in the place, all the time.

The con though is that you may experience vehicle issue while on the road which happened to my friends when they traveled by coaster to this place in the North also. They had to wait a long time for the repair of the vehicle and wasted a good day for sightseeing. So I thought, if traveling such a distance by land, it would be good if two vehicles are on convoy so when one encounters a problem, the other one can tow the stalled vehicle. Good thing there are tow hitches online that you can purchase to be used for towing purposes. I think it should be part of the emergency kit when traveling long distance with another vehicle.

Hopefully, next summer, our family would be able to go to this destination I’ve been dying to see. It would be wonderful for my son to get to know our country’s rich cultural heritage by experiencing walking in a community full of ancient houses and ancient everything.

  1. If ever travel opportunity to hit the road up north kicks off….you will chance upon to see Racat Rapuli Road, an 8 km. stretch of concrete highway leading to the main market of Sta Ana Cagayan. The local residents coined a different name calling it “Alitaptap Route” because of habitual presence of fireflies during the night. After reaching the market place… and still craving to venture further down, just drive straight up for another 7 km and you will hit the dead-end next up… is the vast ocean. “Dulo na ng Pilipinas”.

Choice destination and favourite hang-out where famous Crocodile Island, Anguib Island, and hidden Spanish caves are at best. Situated at the north-eastern tip of Luzon, 640 KM away from Manila. A journey by land will require a traveller approximately 13-15 hours of back-breaking road trip as one must to go across six major provinces in order to reach the place.

But the scenic countryside features the majestic view of the Cagayan Valley, with imposing rolling hills gazing down the vast area of rice land… while on the other side there’s the gentle blows of cool sea-breeze as the road is situated along the sea coastal line. Happy Trip!
