The process for the selection of the Philippine’s new chief justice ended as the supreme court (SC) announced the victor yesterday.

The new head of the highest tribunal is former SC Associate Justice  Maria Lourdes Punzalan Aranal-Sereno.  CJ Sereno is the “first woman chief justice” wand the second youngest chief magistrate since former  CJ Manuel Moran appointed when he was 51.

After the hyped and oust of former Chief Justice Renato Corona, the country watched over the proceedings for the selection with a hawk’s eye. Corona was impeached by the Senate for failing to disclose his assets completely, a gesture expected and mandated from all government officials and employees.

Justice Sereno took her oath this morning at the Malacañang Palance before the President, Benigno Aquino III. Among the expectations from the new CJ is upholding good governance and anti-corrupt practices.
