It was in the 90s when the idea of mediamorphosis was conceptualized by Robert Fidler. It illustrates the evolution or ‘methamorphosis’ the media is undergoing, thus the term “mediamorphosis.”

“Mediamorphosis is a unified way of thinking about the technological evolution of communication media. By studying the communications system as a whole, we will see that new media do not arise spontaneously and independently — they emerge gradually from the metamorphosis.” (definition from the book)

The concept describes the changing landscape in media, from traditional media to the “new media” (online-based media), where we see the interdependence and interplay of the’ old’ and the ‘new.’ For instance, traditional media such as print (newspaper, magazines, and books) and broadcast (television and radio) now have online versions recognizing the fact that more and more people now are embracing internet as a way of life.

In fact, in a study dubbed as “TNS Digital Life 2012,” the result showed that next to television (89 percent), majority of Filipinos rather connect to the internet  (45 percent) instead of listen to the radio (36 percent) or read newspapers and other print materials (16 percent). The respondents to the survey were mostly from urban areas.
