The Nine Good Reading Habits

July 3, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina, self-help · Comment

The other day, I was able to meet Mr. Glenn L. Malimban of National Book Development Board (NBDB) through my good friend Vic Jason Cruz, Marikina City Librarian. Mr. Malimban was a guest during one of the events in celebration of Marikina Reading Week. He modified the Nine (9) good Reading Habits popularized by Jonathan Mooney.

1. Use the Cover-Up. For many readers, the words on the page run and blur together especially if you are hard wire. To tone down this, use a three by five index card to cover everything except the sentence that child is reading. When they finish a line, they move the card down and repeat the process.

2. Give the text the finger. Along with the card, have the child follow their reading with their finger, engaging a tactical learning style.

Marikina is a City of Readers

July 1, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina, self-help · Comment

Reading has always been my favorite hobby. It’s not a surprise that I made Marikina City Librarians my friends. The chief Librarian, Jason Cruz, and his assistant, Nonet Angeles, are totally focused on their aim of making Marikina a City of Readers. This week is officially declared as Marikina Reading Week and the City Library prepared week-long reading and learning activities for children and even adults. There is also a Book Fair joined by different publishing houses at the Marikina Quadrangle at the City Hall. This one I recommend you visit. I’ve already bought children books for my son and was able to get freebies (magazines, notepads and pens) for myself too!

Here is the complete program for the Marikina Reading Week as well as the time and venue so you’d know where to go if you or your kids wanted to participate:

A Letter of Concern from a Marikenya Reader

June 30, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina · 1 Comment

I have received a letter from a Marikenya reader, Ms. Mylene de Leon, also a Marikina resident. I have posted it to reach the Marikina City Government and to create awareness for Marikeños, particularly those living in the area of SSS Village in Concepcion Dos.

We would like to seek your help in raising the awareness of our city government on the series of crimes happening within our vicinity in Olive St SSS Village Marikina City. (Creek side)

Just recently, one of our neighbors who had just gone home from her night duty in a call center, was sexually abused inside their home when gang men, forcibly (knife point) followed her entering their home. Previous to that, there have been series of reports of heinous crimes (rape, robbery, hold up within the vicinity of Olive St.) The incident happened when the city government decided to reclaim the government area along the creek side of Phase 2 Concepcion Dos Olive St.

The Government had cemented the area and work on a bike lane. Though the intentions of the government may be good but this just opened more exit doors for unscrupulous people to easily get away of their evil schemes.

The Government had installed lightings however, these were busted, cable wires were already taken by unscrupulous people. We requested that the city government do a regular patrolling within the vicinity and also, kindly INSTALL FENCE along the creekside to prevent entry of Non-resident of Marikina to pass by in the area.and mark as a boundary between Marikina City and Cainta.

Please do something to apprehend those unscrupulous people to bring back PEACE AND ORDER in our area. We do need your Help. Hope this will merit your attention. (It did Mylene. Let us hope it would merit the attention of the local government too.)

The SM Jobs Fair Update

June 21, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina, jobs · Comment

The Third SM Jobs Fair doe Marikeños just concluded last Friday. The organizers, CENTEX and PESO of the City Government of Marikina, were pleased with the very high acceptance rate. For those who were not able to make it to the jobs fair, do not despair. SM Save More is still accepting applicants for various positions although they have special and immediate needs for Accounting Assistants, Treasury Assistants, and Supervisors. This time, even non-Marikeños may apply. Call their HR Department at 941-2575 or bring your resume to SM Save More located at the Riverbanks Mall in Barangka, Marikina. Special thanks to the kind and patient Ms. Amelie Binayas, HR Officer of SM Save More, for these information.

During the jobs fair also, SM Home World have announced their need for Drivers and the good news is that there’s no age limit for this position. Home World is an affiliate company of SM which sells home furniture. I’m sorry but I do not have the number of SM Home World at this time, you may try calling SM Save More to get more information.

Here are snapshots of the event:

Web Site Designing and The Marikina Web Awards

June 20, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina, blogging, technology · 3 Comments

Marikina recently held its first Web Awards for websites of Barangays and Schools in the city. Since I had a friend from Barangay Sto. Niño where I grew up, I was asked to help in the design and content of their website for Web Awards. I was too willing to help but my skills in web designing is limited. I was able to help edit and write some of the contents and even design the header and some images but that’s about it, I don’t know how to design a website using html. Marikenya.com uses wordpress template and all I need to do is edit its elements to suit my style.

Unfortunately, Sto. Niño lost but the experience convinced me to study professional website designing in the future. For those who need help in designing their websites for their business or organizations, you may check out charlotte web site design firm. It specializes not only in professional web designing services but they also host websites and emails and even do internet marketing for promotion of products or services.

Here are the winners of the First Marikina Web Awards:

Mardi Gras in Marikina

June 19, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina, travel · Comment

Barangay Calumpang of Marikina celebrated their Fiesta last Friday, June 13. My family were lucky to be invited by our friends, Ate Gemma and Kuya Lito, to their household where we feasted on delicious food. They prepared kare-kare, sugpo, lechon kawali, menudo, and many more, For desserts, we had salad and creamy gelatins. My husband and I went home stuffed and happy. :)

My friend from Marikina Valley forum, sir rands (a.k.a. Randyblu) is also from Calumpang. He is also a very good photographer and he was able to take pictures of the Gay Mardi Gras in Calumpang. Let’s take a look at these photos and marvel at how creative gays really are –

Father’s Day at the Park

June 18, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina, general, relationship · 2 Comments

How will I describe the father’s day at our household? Fulfilling.

It was a disaster at first with me forgetting to greet my husband when he came home from work at six in the morning. I only realized he was waiting for it when my mother greeted him and he said, “it’s only nanay who remembered.” That was the perfect time for me to bring out the wrist watch I bought for him as a father’s day gift.

After lunch, we went to the Riverpark with his clan to celebrate father’s day. It was fun especially for the kids who immediately went to the bike rentals, hopped on to the saddles and biked their way around the park.

See my Oly in action as he patiently put on the socks and shoes of our baby. Happy father’s day Honey! You’re every inch of a father and I love you so much for that. :)
