Local and Favorite Dishes from Marikina

Aris of Marikina wrote –

I was surprised to know that Sinigang sa Bayabas and Everlasting (sometimes we call it Llanera) are not that popular (if not completely unknown) to others. These two are one of my favorite dishes. And the thing is, those who knew about these dishes, are those who resides in Marikina!

I brought samplers of these dishes at our office in Libis a few years back and whoa, they all love it and asked for he recipe! Too bad I did not cook it myself and just took those from party left overs :)

To orient you about these dishes or food mentioned by Aris, here are photos of Everlasting or Llanera from gimmeapiece.blogspot.com and Sinigang sa Bayabas from http://pinoyfoodrecipe.blogspot.com –

2010 Special Treats

Let me start the year by sharing with you my way of welcoming the 2010. :D

First stop — indulgence on a much-needed luxury — a spa treat!

After going to SM Marikina to lodge my complaints against Globelines services, I decided to hit another mall since SM department store was not open on January 1. I went to my next favorite mall — the Robinsons Metro East. By this time, I have already decided I wanted a whole body massage so I roam around the beauty and wellness centers at the third level.

Since I already tried Relaksasi Spa a year ago and thought it’s expensive for an ordinary spa service, I looked for another one and found a quite new beauty center named Skin Natural which offers an hour of whole body massage with free use of Dome for only P450. Sounds interesting and reasonably priced so I booked myself in and enjoyed the rest of the spa treat. :D

Christmas Break Diet

christmas noche buena
I photo from filipino-foods.com I

It’s ironic that while Christmas is fast approaching and people are excited about the traditional noche buena and media noche, many of us are also worried about rapid potential weight gain.

In one of the gatherings I attended, I bumped into an old friend who obviously gained a lot of weight. Another friend ask him when he is planning to lose weight, he said after new year. I laughed aloud and I told him, our dieting schedule falls on the same date and I hope we’ll have the guts to do so.

Marikina Tiangge Sa Riverpark (Marikina Riverpark Tiangge)

Have you done your christmas shopping yet? Maybe you may consider visiting the annual Marikina Tiangge sa Ilog (Marikina Riverpark Tiangge), the christmas night market that offers good and bargain deals with a view!

At this time, the tiangges or night market stalls already lined up the riverpark. When we passed along the Marikina Riverpark earlier, it was jampacked with people considering that it is only tuesday night, can you just imagine how full it is on a friday or during the weekend?

It has become a favorite shopping bazaar not only for Marikenyos but also for those coming from nearby cities. I beleieve the reasons are they get to buy products at a cheap and bargain price and splurge on inexpensive but delicious food too while enjoying the beauty of the riverpark.

The Problem with Salty Food Addiction and Impeding Urination

What is the effect of liking salty food and impeding urination? Health problems.

This morning, I accompanied my husband to the doctor. He was having problems with urinating. We later found out that he’s got urinary tract infections or UTI after the result of the urinalysis came out. My husband loved salty food just like me and when he eats sinigang or nilaga, he won’t be able to enjoy the food without salt and chilli by the side. Aside from that, he always delay urinating during the nighttime so as not to disturb his sleep.

Medication for UTI is not easy too as you need to take antibiotics for seven (7) days, afterwhich, you need to undergo a lab test again to make sure you’re healed. At times, the pain due to this sickness is so severe you will feel excruciating pain and would need pain relievers. UTI may also lead to kidney problems if worsened.

Why am I writing about this? I am a regular case of UTI. I acquired this when I was in college and it never left me since then. It even worsened during my first pregnancy and I believe it to be one of the reasons why the immune system of my second baby was not developed well.

Christmas Countdown!

Eighteen (18) days to go before Christmas!!!

Yesterday, while waiting for the church mass, I asked my son if he’s excited about Christmas. He said “yes” and I asked him why. He said it’s a happy and exciting day for him.

I’m very glad my son and I share the same fondness for this special day. Nothing can beat the spirit and excitement of Christmas for me, even my own birthday. It is wonderful that I sort of passed on this positive feelings towards Christmas to my baby.

The Seafood of Roxas and Iloilo

Can you blame me if I easily gained weight for staying three days in Iloilo City and Roxas City where you can eat the freshest seafood in the land?

Please Don’t hate me for bragging about my dining experiences on those towns as I really enjoyed it (much as I wanted to control my appetite). Seafood maybe the most expensive meals in Metro Manila but not in Iloilo and Roxas. Our breakfast, lunch and dinner consisted of crabs, shrimps, squids, blue marlin, scallops, and oyster. At one point, I had to pause after eating a spoonful of oyster because I felt my heart beat went faster than usual. I told myself I don’t want a heart attack in Iloilo and Ilonggos remembering me as the “girl from Marikina who suffered from high blood pressure.”

Indeed, Roxas and Iloilo have the best and freshest seafood in the country and I hope I’ll be back there soon as I enjoyed not only the food but the people as well. Ilonggos are very hospitable and I had the most relaxing and enjoyable weekend because of them. The Iloonggo tongue even rubbed on me even after I came back to Marikina. I loved saying “tinuod” instead of “totoo” (true) and “ako man” instead of “ako din” (me too). After my brief tours in these towns, I appreciated more the beauty of local dialects.

Loving the Seafood Capital of the Philippines, Roxas City

Last weekend, our group invaded the peaceful, serene and friendly town of Roxas City, Philippines.

It was pretty exciting since the airport of Roxas is not as developed and as big as the airports of other provinces I’ve been to. Instead of walking through a “vacuum-like” hallway from the plane, we walked straight down a staircase from the plane’s door. The PAL security even allowed us to take photos beside the plane which I will be posting in my next article.

Since our flight was set very early in the morning, as in 5AM, we had to wake up as early as 1AM to get to the airport on time for checking-in. We were very sleepy so to speak. Fortunately, our very kind Kuya Jon treated us to a “Korean breakfast” with hot chocolate, bread toasts, and half-cooked fried eggs. I was shocked that every meal includes two eggs which means we all need to eat two eggs! That made me gagged although I loved the bread toasts with butter, cheese and sweet spread. The breakfast meal cost almost P200.00, expensive yes, but everything are expensive inside the airport.
