Alternative Learning Strategies for School Break
In the next two months, school time is over and parents will be busy again looking for activities their children would engage in during the summer vacation.
The popular strategy to keep students busy and still learning on summer break is enrolling them to different summer classes like art lessons, sports clinics, and academic tutorials. Having them in art and sports classes would improve their creativity, innate physical abilities and social interaction skills. Putting them for Math, English and Science tutorials will help them get ready and ahead for the classes in June.

On Parenting: Boosting Child’s Confidence
Posted by mhel in general, relationship, self-help, the Filipina on February 13th, 2010
As a parent, we should always model strength to our children so they would not feel weak and remain motivated. What always break a parent’s heart is learning that your child is being demean by other people.
The other day, while chatting nonchalantly with my only son, he innocently blurted that he’s ugly. I said this to make him feel better: “of course not, isn’t it you look after Mama so you’re not ugly cause I’m not.” He replied, “my classmate said so.”
My son developed an obvious case of skin asthma where white spots and rashes took over his entire face. The derma said the disease is similar to eczema and does look like one so it’s definitely not a pretty sight on his face. with the creams and ointments we applied, the rashes are all gone but the white spots remained and the derma said it will take months or even years before the scars or the spots fade.
At first, I thought my son is not bothered by this. He seemed unfazed by the mockery he gets from mean people but apparently, it is affecting him. His confidence is melting down as his classmates and others tease him about his spots. I feel so bad about this and I almost cried in front of him. I composed myself and said: “Don’t mind them son. Just tell them the spots will be gone in no time. It’s bad to tease other people about their weaknesses or their looks and you should not do that to others too.”

Summer Art Workshop for Kids and Kids at Heart
Posted by mhel in about marikina, general, self-help, training on February 8th, 2010
Every year, I get questions from parents about summer workshops their children may enroll in during vacation. Here it is, the 2010 Summer Art Workshop for Kids and Kids at Heart.
The workshop is very timely as February is declared as Arts Month. The city government, led by Marikina Cultural Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotions Office (MCTTIPO), prepared a lot of exciting activities for the promotion of arts and culture in Marikina this February.
The courses offered for the summer art workshop are the following:

A Birthday Collage of Happy Memories
Allow me to briefly narrate how a simple but beautiful birthday celebration went for a Marikenya…

In my last article, A Girl’s Simple Birthday Wish, I admitted what I wanted for my birthday is a house and lot, a really big dream. To humor myself though and to make the first step towards achieving this goal of a lifetime, I started my d-day by attending a morning seminar on housing loan at PagIbig in Atrium, Makati. With my luck, I met a very nasty and rude guy who was determined to ruin my day! But I was more determined to save my happiness for my birthday so I just gave him some calm words and walked away. The seminar was a success, I learned what I needed to learn, if and ever, I would decide to get a housing loan from PagIbig.
Next in the agenda was eating lunch. Our group consisting of my good friends Ninang Baybee, Ate Andrea and Ate Lisa and my hubby decided to hit it big for lunch by going to a buffet restaurant, the Kamayan Dads Saisaki! The last time I was in this place was four years ago and I really enjoyed their meal. The restaurant will provide you options, you can go Filipino or Japanese for more than three hundred (300) pesos or try everything on the house for more than five hundred (500) pesos which they call crossover. We decided to go Filipino and ravished the local dishes with gusto. We were even serenaded by the in-house musicians with a birthday song for me! Perfect!

A Journey of Experiences and Learning Towards the New Me
Posted by mhel in general, self-help, the Filipina on January 13th, 2010
“The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions, and not on our circumstances.” Martha Washington
When you were born from a poor family, physically unattractive with a fat body, will you grow up with a positive outlook in life? I am Marikenya and —

While there are many who see beyond physical beauty, I still maintain my belief that our society can be judgmental to people who are not graced with such. What are my reasons for saying so? I grew up being mocked and humiliated for my imperfect physique which made my otherwise happy childhood a story with bitter parts.
I was born fat, grew up fat, and until now, as fat as I was once, or even fatter. I always say jokingly that the only time I ever experienced having a size 23 waistline was when I was in grade 2 (in elementary). In short, I never experienced having a thin or sexy waist and body in my entire life. While some say that “size does not matter,” in many occasions, I realized it does.

On Spotlight: Tzu Chi Foundation Relief Work in Marikina
Posted by mhel in about marikina, general, self-help on December 7th, 2009
When people help one another, pains due to losses will be lighter. In the case of Marikina, this maybe true.

On spotlight today is the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation which volunteers unselfishly helped the Ondoy flood victims of the city of Marikina last September, 2009. Tzu Chi Foundation, through its kind and judicious leader, Master Cheng Yen of Taiwan, focused their relief efforts on our dear city providing relentless aids to Marikenyos who suffered losses of lives and properties.
Tzu Chi Foundation, aside from providing medical and financial aid to Ondoy victims, also helped in the physical restoration of the city through the cleanup process. Our community is among the beneficiary of the relief efforts of the foundation and although I am not a direct beneficiary, I am very grateful for Tzu Chi Foundation for extending such kindness and compassion to the citizenry of Marikina.
To the Tzu Chi volunteers from Taiwan and all parts of the world, mabuhay kayong lahat and may you continue grow in numbers so more people will be helped and be inspired by your mission. Thank you.

White Christmas for a Marikenya
Because of the terrible heat and the busyness of the season, I feel drained. Physically and otherwise, I feel the need for a vacation, or better yet, a cold vacation.
I am now a fan of the popular Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) of ABS-CBN Channel 2 which air from Mondays to Saturdays. There was a time that one of the housemates from the PBB house from the Philippines, Caty, swithed house with a PBB housemate from Finland. Before the day Cathy was supposed to return to the Philippines, the housemates were startled when snows began falling down. I’m not sure whether PBB just set up the snow rain but nevertheless, even if I was just watching from the television, I can feel the exitement of actually joining a snowfight or making a snowman or toboganing.

The Water Crisis
While watching the news the other day (thank God we were able to finally watch the television after weeks of darkness brought by Ondoy), an environmental expert said not because there were floods, we won’t have problems with water.
I believe that we should seriously think about and act on the issue of potable drinking water shortage in the future. Philippines was ranked as among the top wasters of water.

The Dilemma of Moving On
Posted by mhel in famous people, general, health and fitness, self-help on September 25th, 2009
Are you a late sleeper? I am. It has been my habit to still stay awake after a a full day of heavy work. Usually, if I am not yet grossly tired, I would still open my laptop and continue working while watching super late night TV shows. When I am too tired to bear another ray of radiation from the PC, I would simple lie down, watch TV and try to relax while hugging my baby.
Since we don’t have a cable and there’s nothing else to watch after Survivor of GMA 7 (I’m not a fan of Koreanovelas anymore so I don’t watch Shining Inheritance), I am glued to the SNN updating myself with the showbiz chismis of the day. Last night, the news was about Richard Gutierrez and his personal assistant (PA) Nomar who died because of an accident the family is now blaming Richard for. The wife said in her initial attempt to talk to Richard to know clearly what happened to her husband, Annabelle Rama just told her, move on already as Richard is already doing so. She said its easily said than done, how can she move on when she and her kids were the ones forever affected by the accident.
Kris Aquino made a comment after the interview confirming that the idea of “moving on” is really easy to say but very hard to do as she is having difficulty not crying all the time with her mom’s (former president Cory Aquino) memories. I can vouch for this thought as my heart bleeds whenever I remember my son and my tatay.
