The Nine Good Reading Habits

July 3, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina, self-help · Comment

The other day, I was able to meet Mr. Glenn L. Malimban of National Book Development Board (NBDB) through my good friend Vic Jason Cruz, Marikina City Librarian. Mr. Malimban was a guest during one of the events in celebration of Marikina Reading Week. He modified the Nine (9) good Reading Habits popularized by Jonathan Mooney.

1. Use the Cover-Up. For many readers, the words on the page run and blur together especially if you are hard wire. To tone down this, use a three by five index card to cover everything except the sentence that child is reading. When they finish a line, they move the card down and repeat the process.

2. Give the text the finger. Along with the card, have the child follow their reading with their finger, engaging a tactical learning style.

Marikina is a City of Readers

July 1, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina, self-help · Comment

Reading has always been my favorite hobby. It’s not a surprise that I made Marikina City Librarians my friends. The chief Librarian, Jason Cruz, and his assistant, Nonet Angeles, are totally focused on their aim of making Marikina a City of Readers. This week is officially declared as Marikina Reading Week and the City Library prepared week-long reading and learning activities for children and even adults. There is also a Book Fair joined by different publishing houses at the Marikina Quadrangle at the City Hall. This one I recommend you visit. I’ve already bought children books for my son and was able to get freebies (magazines, notepads and pens) for myself too!

Here is the complete program for the Marikina Reading Week as well as the time and venue so you’d know where to go if you or your kids wanted to participate:

Best Blessings From God

Last week, I subjected myself to the dreaded ultrasound. I was in jitters. Luckily, I was accompanied by my good friend, Pops. She helped me eased my tension by making me laugh. The ultrasound would determine if the lumps or mass the doctor found in my breast are benign. I was very depressed the night before and I cried very hard out of fear but I thought, tomorrow is the day and soon, it would be over and done.

Fit and Right

June 20, 2008 · Filed Under self-help · 2 Comments

In my earlier post, I talked about being happy no matter what size we’re in. I have started living a fulfilling life when I decided to accept and love myself. I have no doubt people should not focus too much on their physical impunities that would no doubt affect their self-esteem.

Tonight though, I have decided to try very hard to go on a diet for health reasons. Although my husband prepared a very special dinner for me, he reminded me that I should now watch my food intake to ensure the success of my health plans. He jokingly told me to learn a new sport like golf and even volunteered buying me new golf bags so I’d look like a pro. We both know for a fact that we won’t be able to afford such sport. What I can afford though is going back (again) to the gym and run laps at the Marikina Sports Park. I may even call on some friends to play badminton with me from time to time. It’s time to bring out my sports pants and shirts which I placed at the bottom of my closet.

It’s time to exercise, diet, and live a healthy lifestyle. If you wanna join the fun, just give me a message. I’d surely appreciate a running buddy. :)

Health Consciousness Month

June 19, 2008 · Filed Under general, self-help · Comment

I consider June my personal health consciousness month. I have been experiencing problems with my health which have been quite troubling. Last week, I underwent a pre-screening procedure for breast cancer and the result made my knees very weak. To add to that, I was having heart beat irregularities especially during nighttime so I’m having hard time getting sleep. In one of those sleepless nights, I researched about heart conditions and problems and I stumbled upon the HeartLibrary.com website which proved to be very helpful in understanding matters concerning the “heart.” They even have an interactive heart video library that makes health information easy to understand.

I’m only in my early 30’s and I must admit, I have been very lax with my health thinking I’m still young and I’m not prone to any illness. It’s only now that I’m seeing the light. I hope to celebrate more glorious years of Marikenya. Celebrate life with me. Let’s live healthy.

Empowering the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

June 16, 2008 · Filed Under blogging, self-help · 2 Comments

As I am writing this post, I am silently praying that the small lumps the doctor found in my breast are benign. It is scary to think that I am a potential victim of the deadly breast cancer. It never crossed my mind until next week when I underwent the breast screening procedure. My lab examination is scheduled on Thursday and until then, I am bound to feel miserable and worried.

We are all vulnerable to breast cancer, women and men alike. This tag of my friend Joy of Garden of Moments is indeed timely. I feel strongly for this campaign, I hope you too would feel the need to support it.

June is the International Month for Breast Cancer Awareness, let us all pitch in to spread the information on this killer disease in the blogosphere to help more people worldwide.

Facts we need to know about Breast Cancer:

• The first sign of breast cancer usually shows up on a woman’s mammogram before it can be felt or any other symptoms are present.

• Risks for breast cancer include a family history, atypical hyperplasia, delaying pregnancy until after age 30 or never becoming pregnant, early menstruation (before age 12), late menopause (after age 55), current use or use in the last ten years of oral contraceptives, and daily consumption of alcohol.

• Early detection of breast cancer, through monthly breast self-exam and particularly yearly mammography after age 40, offers the best chance for survival. Read more

Moms, Be Careful When Shopping for School Supplies. Read My National Book Store Experience.

June 11, 2008 · Filed Under general, self-help, shopping · 6 Comments

The school season just started this week and until last week and even up to this day, mothers are very busy preparing the things their kids need for school. This includes trips to the book and department stores to buy school supplies, bags, shoes, etc. I was one of these moms and I headed to the National Bookstore (NBS) in Robinson’s Metro East last weekend to scout for a trolley bag for my little Marikenyo.

When we came to NBS, it was not surprising that it was totally crowded with parents and even children making last-minute shopping for school supplies. I was lax with my bag since I was thinking, I’m in the mall, not in Divisoria or a market. After some time, I heard the guy beside me saying a little louder “mag-ingat sa mandurukot” (be careful with snatchers). I immediately looked for my MP4 which I placed in the pocket of my bag and learned that the zipper was opened and the only thing left is the earphones. My MP4 was stolen while I was browsing for school supplies right inside the National Bookstore!

Love Versus Infatuation. Know if it is really Love that Struck You.

Love withers with predictability; its very essence is surprise and
amazement. To make love a prisoner of the mundane is to take its passion and lose it forever. Leo Buscaglia

All of us dream of a happy ending. Canned fairy tale love affairs coupled with castles, knight in shining armours and chivalrous and romatic heroes. I have my share of these dreams. I stared night after night at the ceiling of my cramped bedroom starry-eyed and looking at an imaginary falling star silently praying that my prince will come and save me from being loveless…

Response To A Marikenya.Com Reader

June 5, 2008 · Filed Under about marikina, blogging, business, self-help · 5 Comments

Got an email today from a Marikenya reader, Roma:

Hi gorgeous Marikenyos and Marikenyas,

Thanks for putting up a wonderful site like this. I would just like to ask if you know of any legit work-from-home type of job. You see, I am a mother of an eight year old boy and a nine month old baby girl. I have decided to stay at home after giving birth to our baby girl to be a full-time mother. However, because times are so hard, considering we’re spending so much for my baby’s special milk (she has allergy to milk protein so she only takes Nestlé Alfaré which costs Php1180 for a 400gram can), i need to find a source of income while being a home-maker. I hope you can enlighten me. Any comment, suggestion, or idea will be highly appreciated. Thanks and more power.

Firs, thank you for your letter (sent through Marikenya’s contact form) and for appreciating this blog. I can feel your dilemma, most mothers would. At this point, I can only give you the strategies that has worked for me in augmenting the income of my family, hope any or all of these would be able to be of use to you too:

  • Online Selling at ebay.ph or auctionph. Before I became a blogger, I was an active seller at ebay philippines and was able to sell a lot of stuff also at auctionph. Selling at online sites is really a good way of earning money at the same time getting rid of stuff (clothing, appliances, jewelries, etc.) that is just lying around the house. There’s no limit to what you can sell at ebay. I have sold used books, used cellphones, brand new bags and accessories, and even digital products (see my ebay store). Log on at ebay to see how it works. You don’t need to leave the house and your kids when you make a sale, just call the local courier (liked Air21, Aboitiz2Go, or Xend Express) and they would gladly pick up the item for delivery at your house.
  • Blogging. It does work. There are too many mom bloggers today and I’m one of them. Blogging has become a very good way of expressing self, promoting an advocacy, and earning additional income. I know a lot of blogger friends who are stay-at home moms too and are now earning hefty dollars from their blogs.
  • Try Selling through Avon, Sara Lee or Sophie Martin. Of all the three, the Sophie Martin is the one I am recommending because I’m a member myself and the profit is really good because their products are pretty and saleable. You also get 30% discount for every item and rebates for every sale. The only hitch is you need a start-up capital for this because unlike Avon or Sara Lee, they don’t give you credit line, every order is paid in cash. If you’re from Marikina and interested in this venture, send me a message again so I can provide you more information.

Roma, let us hope that our mom readers out there would provide you also good income generating tips for you. God bless…
