Health Talk: A Smart Decision Towards A Healthy Lifestyle
Posted by mhel in general, health and fitness, self-help on June 4th, 2010
“Sometimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change your life forever.” Keri Russell
The invitation to finally start my long for a lifestyle change arrived late in the evening of Wednesday with a mysterious plant containing a riddle.
The unusual invite set off my excitement and kept me up all night. I was thinking about the riddle and its connection to the plant. I googled the ideas from my head and after learning more about smart fibers, called it a night and wished it’s already time for the product launch.

What Matters Most
Posted by mhel in general, relationship, self-help on May 31st, 2010
If you will answer the question: ‘what matters most in your life,’ what would be your answer?
One of my many blessings in life is that God provided me with a good set of in-laws. My husband’s kind and patient mother and his set of fun-to-be-with sisters and brothers. I guess it’s a bonus that majority of hubby’s siblings are academicians and we seem to understand each other and like the same subjects plus the fact that we all love laughing.
Whenever they invite me for an informal get-together for a chit-chat, we always end up in hilarious conversations and I would go home with a light heart and a painful stomach from laughing hard. I am very grateful that they did not just accepted me in the family but really treated me as one.

Success Tip: Maintaining a Simple Lifestyle
Whenever I handle seminars for college students, I would hear students saying they wanted to get rich. The question is what concrete actions are you taking to make this dream a reality.
In discussing success, I am one of the thousands, or probably millions, who believe that the third richest man in the world, Warren Buffet, is a perfect study. I first heard about Buffet some four years ago. He was at that time a very rich man already, second to Bill Gates who was then the richest man in the World. Today, Buffet is the third richest man and Gates is behind him being fourth in the list.
What struck me at that time was Buffet’s advice to young people. He said: “do not use credit cards.” Live only within your means, pay for your purchases in cash and do not be tempt to “swipe” for products or services you cannot afford. This way, you will not be buried deep in debt. I wish I’ve heard of these wise words from Warren Buffet before I activated and used my first credit card in 2002.

Improving One’s Decision-Making Skills
What kind of a decision maker are you? Do you make decisions haphazardly or really go through options one-by-one and methodically?
Decision-making is a skill that one develops overtime. It is the process of selecting one course of action from several alternatives. Many people are afraid of making decisions because of being accountable for the consequences that may arise from such decision. Oftentimes, decisions are hard to make when we are offered terrible alternatives or several excellent choices.
Not being able to develop one’s decision-making skills would frequently lead to a person’s dissatisfaction over his/her decisions. Developing our abilities to make sound decisions would increase our chances of being satisfied with our choices.

If the Problem is Your Face: A Guide for Teens in Facing Facial Issues
Posted by mhel in general, health and fitness, self-help on April 7th, 2010
Have you heard of the humorous cliche which I think was popularized in the 90s “how can you face the problem if the problem is your face?” Many teens in their adolescence experience losing confidence because of having facial skin problems such as acne, pimples, warts and freckles.

As for me, I was in high school when I was suddenly bombarded with unsightly pimples and acne. It was all over my face, from the forehead to the chin and it made me felt very ugly. I was too shy for picture taking or engaging in personal conversations because I thought my pimples were just too distracting. My facial issue lined up with my other issues such as being fat which burned my confidence to the ground.

Realizations and Insights on Career Planning
Thousands of students will graduate this April. For those graduating from high school, they’d be facing the decision of what college course should they take while college graduates would have to decide what jobs or works should they target for application. Both decision-making are actually career planning.
In the last two (2) years, I have conducted seminars on the topic and encountered a lot of students who in their senior year in college are still wondering what career should really fit them, more so, would make them happy.
Planning a career is not easy because it would require a thorough analysis of yourself — your abilities, interests and skills, your values, and the practicality of the choice. All of these things must be considered to plan effectively for a career.

Alternative Learning Strategies for School Break
In the next two months, school time is over and parents will be busy again looking for activities their children would engage in during the summer vacation.
The popular strategy to keep students busy and still learning on summer break is enrolling them to different summer classes like art lessons, sports clinics, and academic tutorials. Having them in art and sports classes would improve their creativity, innate physical abilities and social interaction skills. Putting them for Math, English and Science tutorials will help them get ready and ahead for the classes in June.

On Parenting: Boosting Child’s Confidence
Posted by mhel in general, relationship, self-help, the Filipina on February 13th, 2010
As a parent, we should always model strength to our children so they would not feel weak and remain motivated. What always break a parent’s heart is learning that your child is being demean by other people.
The other day, while chatting nonchalantly with my only son, he innocently blurted that he’s ugly. I said this to make him feel better: “of course not, isn’t it you look after Mama so you’re not ugly cause I’m not.” He replied, “my classmate said so.”
My son developed an obvious case of skin asthma where white spots and rashes took over his entire face. The derma said the disease is similar to eczema and does look like one so it’s definitely not a pretty sight on his face. with the creams and ointments we applied, the rashes are all gone but the white spots remained and the derma said it will take months or even years before the scars or the spots fade.
At first, I thought my son is not bothered by this. He seemed unfazed by the mockery he gets from mean people but apparently, it is affecting him. His confidence is melting down as his classmates and others tease him about his spots. I feel so bad about this and I almost cried in front of him. I composed myself and said: “Don’t mind them son. Just tell them the spots will be gone in no time. It’s bad to tease other people about their weaknesses or their looks and you should not do that to others too.”

Summer Art Workshop for Kids and Kids at Heart
Posted by mhel in about marikina, general, self-help, training on February 8th, 2010
Every year, I get questions from parents about summer workshops their children may enroll in during vacation. Here it is, the 2010 Summer Art Workshop for Kids and Kids at Heart.
The workshop is very timely as February is declared as Arts Month. The city government, led by Marikina Cultural Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotions Office (MCTTIPO), prepared a lot of exciting activities for the promotion of arts and culture in Marikina this February.
The courses offered for the summer art workshop are the following:
