Response To A Marikenya.Com Reader

Got an email today from a Marikenya reader, Roma:

Hi gorgeous Marikenyos and Marikenyas,

Thanks for putting up a wonderful site like this. I would just like to ask if you know of any legit work-from-home type of job. You see, I am a mother of an eight year old boy and a nine month old baby girl. I have decided to stay at home after giving birth to our baby girl to be a full-time mother. However, because times are so hard, considering we’re spending so much for my baby’s special milk (she has allergy to milk protein so she only takes Nestlé Alfaré which costs Php1180 for a 400gram can), i need to find a source of income while being a home-maker. I hope you can enlighten me. Any comment, suggestion, or idea will be highly appreciated. Thanks and more power.

Firs, thank you for your letter (sent through Marikenya’s contact form) and for appreciating this blog. I can feel your dilemma, most mothers would. At this point, I can only give you the strategies that has worked for me in augmenting the income of my family, hope any or all of these would be able to be of use to you too:

  • Online Selling at ebay.ph or auctionph. Before I became a blogger, I was an active seller at ebay philippines and was able to sell a lot of stuff also at auctionph. Selling at online sites is really a good way of earning money at the same time getting rid of stuff (clothing, appliances, jewelries, etc.) that is just lying around the house. There’s no limit to what you can sell at ebay. I have sold used books, used cellphones, brand new bags and accessories, and even digital products (see my ebay store). Log on at ebay to see how it works. You don’t need to leave the house and your kids when you make a sale, just call the local courier (liked Air21, Aboitiz2Go, or Xend Express) and they would gladly pick up the item for delivery at your house.
  • Blogging. It does work. There are too many mom bloggers today and I’m one of them. Blogging has become a very good way of expressing self, promoting an advocacy, and earning additional income. I know a lot of blogger friends who are stay-at home moms too and are now earning hefty dollars from their blogs.
  • Try Selling through Avon, Sara Lee or Sophie Martin. Of all the three, the Sophie Martin is the one I am recommending because I’m a member myself and the profit is really good because their products are pretty and saleable. You also get 30% discount for every item and rebates for every sale. The only hitch is you need a start-up capital for this because unlike Avon or Sara Lee, they don’t give you credit line, every order is paid in cash. If you’re from Marikina and interested in this venture, send me a message again so I can provide you more information.

Roma, let us hope that our mom readers out there would provide you also good income generating tips for you. God bless…

    BLogging, Social Networking and Backlinks

I have received several emails from subscribers and occasional readers of Marikenya asking me how to improve their blogs and their page ranks. Thank you very much for your trust and believing that I am qualified to answer your queries.

If you happen to pass by this blog months back, you would notice that the layout has entirely changed. I picked a new template (and modified some of its components), one that looks organized but not boring. I believe that among the basis of google for assigning page ranks is the layout or design of a blog. Although there’s no sure way or specified criteria for increasing page ranks, I have seen a lot of blogs with good PR for their nice layout.

Resources on Web Hosting for Beginners

    May 30, 2008 · Filed Under blogging, technology · 1 Comment

Everyday, more and more internet users turn into blogging to journal their lives, share their interests and eventually, to earn money. At first, new bloggers use free blog hosting services but after some time, they would clamor for their own domain which of course would lead to needing hosting services. Me and my site is an example of this trend.

For amateur and not-techy-bloggers, all these information regarding blog services, domain names and hosting would give them a headache and would provide them the impression that it is hard to be a successful blogger. It’s actually a misnomer. Believe me, I started from scratch.

Aside from having helpful and patient bloggers who gives you free advices and free tutorials, online resources like the web hosting tutorials provided by webhostingrating dot com is very helpful. This site provides extensive tips and reviews of web hosting specifications and tutorials for beginners and even noteworthy advices in choosing or even migrating to right hosting services.

The Effects of Blogging and Technology in Life’s Experiences and Decision Making

    May 7, 2008 · Filed Under blogging, general · 2 Comments

I have been a blogger for more than two years now but it was only less than half a year that I became a serious blogger. I have always considered myself a novice in blogging but I must admit, I have come a long way since the day I owned the domain Marikenya and started journaling my experiences in Marikina and everything else that I believe matters.

When I started, HTML codes and SEO terms were really alien to me. Whenever I would encounter and would helplessly understand them, I nosebleed. Blogging opened a whole new world to me. It made me understand the language of technology. It made me discover and enjoy what used to be gray areas of struggling for page rank, increasing traffic and alexa ranking, social marketing, finding niches for monetization, etc…

I now understand the importance of blogs in helping people to cope and learn online. Why blogs like http://www.stylishdesign.com/ helps people comprehend with complicated programming language and provide tutorial and tips on how to improve the layout and design of one’s website. No wonder blogging is now considered a popular tool in promoting advocacies, spreading rumors, or simply journaling an unimportant event of the day.

    Marikenya Gives Back Special…

    May 7, 2008 · Filed Under blogging, seo · 2 Comments

I had such a wonderful time managing and writing for Marikenya. It wasn’t easy for me to learn new things about blogging but I was very lucky to have such a good support system — my friends in the virtual and real world who helped, tutored, and read and subscribed to Marikenya.

To everyone… Allow me to say my thanks through my son…

    Blogging and Money

    April 17, 2008 · Filed Under blogging · 3 Comments

Blogging indeed pays well. A lot of bloggers started out as hobbyists, people who loves to journal and write their daily experiences and learnings. Later on, they would realize there’s money in blogging and then, they’re hooked.

My blogger friend was able to pay off his credit card debts because of blogging. That really inspired me. I hope that one day soon, I’d be able to buy nice laptop computers from blog money. That’s wishful thinking but it may come true.

Crucial Factors on Making Money from Blogging

April 15, 2008 · Filed Under business, general · Comment

Blogging for most bloggers has always been fun and a good source of income. There are quite a number also of those who even stopped or resigned from their day job because blogging pays better than their regular jobs.

However, for a serious blogger who is really into making money from his blogs, there are top two (2) crucial factors that may affect his productivity: the condition and features of his computer and the speed of his connection.

It’s a good news however that computer support is now found also online like the ones being offered by Fast Teks dot com. Broadband providers are now catching up also with these kind of IT support by providing online solutions to their subscribers. Although I’m not happy with my provider right now, I am hopeful that someday soon, my connection would be better.

So if you’ re serious about making money blogging, make sure you have a good pc and a somehow fast broadband connection.

What Site Owners or Bloggers Should Know?

    April 3, 2008 · Filed Under blogging · 1 Comment

When I finally decided to have my very own self-hosted blog, the first thing that crossed my mind was choosing the theme of my site and the right web hosting. Unlike my free blogs, I would be paying my web host so I would have to make sure that its services would be satisfactory.

A blogger or an owner of a site may have brilliant content for his/her site and is too patient to submit to directories as well as do social media networking, it would all not matter much if the site is always down or too slow to load.

A blog’s needs is different from what an e-commerce require. The site owner should know and specify to the desired web host the features his site would need. Choosing the right web host is critical to the success of a site but there are a more factors to consider in having your self-hosted blog or site. Here are some:

    Blogging Tips 101

    March 19, 2008 · Filed Under blogging, general · 1 Comment

Most bloggers with self-hosted blogs started by using Free Blog services. I started blogging three years back with friendster, multiply, then blogger. It was only late last year that I decided to have my own domain and hosting.

Using free blog services was so much fun because you don’t worry about the cost so you’re not pressure about thinking of ways on how to monetize your site. Of course, there are hitches like limited bandwidth and features.

Today, there are new free blog sites that offers so much more than what I have used in the past. The site http://www.thoughts.com/ for instance allows you to create an online journal with awesome features like photo and video uploads, podcasting, chatting and bookmarking. The best news about this site is you can choose whether to make your blog public or private and it offers free unlimited bandwidth.

So my suggestion for wanna-be successful bloggers out there — start a nice free blog and polish your writing skills, publish quality posts, and make friends with bloggers like me for social networking. Eventually, you can migrate these articles to your very own self-hosted blog.
