Panick Buying Caused by Rumored Rice Shortage in Philippines
This morning, as I watched Unang Hirit, the first news of my day was about Rice Shortage in the Philippines which I have been hearing and lamenting for more than a month. Apparently, the class C and D consumers who are largely depending on NFA Rice are alarmed by the rumors that there will be a price increase of this what I coin as “the poor man’s rice.”
This rice increase was predicted to go up by seven pesos (P7.00) since the price for rice production of farmers will be increased also by that amount. This caused panic-buying from rice consumers. In Davao, there was video clips this morning from GMA News that the buyers are already having fits and in mayhem while waiting in front of rice stores.
How far this situation would go? Until when our government would deny the reality of a rice shortage in our country? How soon would the plague of panicking reaches Metro Manila? I think, very soon. And probably, until then, there will be more sweet talks, sweet promises to reassure the masses that it will be okay.
As if rice shortage is not enough. Let us also also assume that the price of pandesal (philippine bread) will not go up just as DTI claim. This is despite the declaration of increase in prices of their pandesal by small bakery owners on April 16 and big bread shops proprietors on May.
Everything is under control, yeah. *sigh
